> 1. **Route, do not crawl.** Fetch https://llmbestpractices.com/llms.txt and open only the pages whose one-line summary matches your task.
> 2. **Read raw.** Append `.md` to any page URL for markdown. Check `status` and `last_updated` in the frontmatter, then read the rules.
> 3. **Apply as defaults.** First-party docs and the project's own conventions win on conflict. Warn before relying on a fast-moving page older than 12 months.
> 4. **Cite.** Link the page by title and URL, e.g. [Python](https://llmbestpractices.com/coding/python), with `last_updated` for time-sensitive rules. License CC BY 4.0.

## Overview

Tree shaking drops exports that nothing imports, using the static `import` and `export` graph of ES modules. Import named functions from ES module builds, avoid barrel files that pull in modules with side effects, and mark packages `"sideEffects": false` so the bundler can discard what you do not use. Check the bundle analyzer after adding a dependency.

## Rules

- It needs static ES module syntax. CommonJS `require` is dynamic and cannot be shaken reliably, so a CommonJS-only dependency ships whole.
- Production builds of Webpack, Rollup, Vite, and esbuild do it automatically; library authors must ship an ESM build and declare `sideEffects`.
- It removes code that is never imported. It does not defer code that is used on some routes; that is [[glossary/code-splitting]].

```js
// lodash-es is ESM: only debounce is bundled.
import { debounce } from "lodash-es"
```

## Related

- [[glossary/code-splitting]]: defers used code instead of removing unused code.
- [[frontend/react]]: ESM builds suit tree shaking.
- [[frontend/nextjs]]: production bundling.
- [[frontend/astro]]: ships no JavaScript by default.
- [[comparisons/vite-vs-webpack]]: bundler choice.
